Newtown Pippin Single Varietal
Newton Pippin quickly became a favorite of the colonists, including founding fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In fact, while visiting France, Jefferson stated "They have no apples here to compare with our Newtown Pippin."
Called "The Founding Apple," the Newtown Pippin apple has a long and historic tale. Newtown Pippin originated in 1730 by chance from a seed (or pip) near the village of Newtown on Long Island, NY. It quickly became a favorite of the colonists, including founding fathers George Washington and Thomas Jefferson. In fact, while visiting France, Jefferson stated "They have no apples here to compare with our Newtown Pippin." As time passed, the sleepy village of Newtown was swallowed into New York City and the Newtown Pippin apple lost it's popularity. However, thanks to the efforts of groups like Slow Foods USA the variety has enjoyed a comeback, and trees are being planted all over New York City.
Our Newtown Pippin cyder is a single varietal cyder, mean that only juice from Newtown Pippin apples is used in the fermentation process. The apples were grown in Hood River, Oregon. The resulting cyder is dry and complex in flavor. Newtown Pippin apples make a very clear cyder which means minimal filtration is required.
